About

SouthwardTech covers artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced industry across China and the Global South.

Technology is increasingly developed, financed, deployed and adapted outside the traditional US–Europe axis. That shift is under-reported in English, and where it is reported it tends to arrive as either promotion or alarm. We try for something more useful: what was actually built, who paid, what stage it has reached, and what can be verified.

That means covering China’s domestic technology sector and its internationalisation, but also industry that owes nothing to China — a data centre in Jakarta, a language model in Nairobi, a chip design house in São Paulo. Not every story here involves China, and the ones that do are not automatically about China.

We publish reporting, analysis, company profiles and two running trackers: Deployment Watch, which follows announced projects through to operation or abandonment, and Companies to Watch.

The publication is independent and reader-supported. It takes no funding from the companies or governments it covers. See Editorial Standards for how that is maintained, and Contact to get in touch.
